Safeguarding Policy
(1) Policy Statement
Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club is fully committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of all children, young people and adults at risk who participate in golf at our club.
We will protect individuals from harm, promote a safe and inclusive environment, and respond appropriately to concerns in line with Scottish Golf and Children 1st guidance.This document aligns with the safeguarding standards set by Scottish Golf SafeGolf accreditation.
(2) Scope
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, coaches, committee members and contractors across all club activities, including coaching, competitions, events and online environments.
(3) Key Principles
We will prioritise welfare, treat everyone with dignity and respect, promote inclusion, and take all concerns seriously.
(4) Legal Framework
This policy aligns with Scottish legislation including the Children (Scotland) Act 1995, Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 and PVG Act 2007.
(5) Roles and Responsibilities
The Club Committee ensures safeguarding is prioritised. The Club Welfare Officer manages concerns and acts as the main contact. Staff and volunteers must report concerns and maintain appropriate boundaries.

(6) Safe Recruitment & PVG
The club follows safer recruitment practices including PVG membership where required, references and clear role descriptions.
(7) Codes of Conduct
All individuals must behave appropriately, maintain boundaries and follow guidance on communication and conduct.
(8) Recognising Concerns
Abuse may include physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect, bullying or exploitation. Indicators include behavioural changes, fear, injuries or concerning disclosures.
(9) Responding to Concerns
Stay calm, listen, reassure and report immediately to the Welfare Officer. Do not investigate or promise confidentiality.
(10) Reporting Procedures
Report concerns to the Club Welfare Officer. If immediate danger, call 999. External agencies include Children 1st, Social Work and Police Scotland.
(11) Recording Concerns
Record facts, dates, names, exact words and actions taken. Store securely and confidentially.
(12) Training & Awareness
The club ensures safeguarding training is completed and updated regularly.
(13) Managing Allegations
All allegations are taken seriously and managed in line with Scottish Golf procedures.
(14) Online Safety
Appropriate use of social media and safe communication with juniors is required.
(15) Review
This policy is reviewed annually or following any incident.
