The History & Future of MEGC

A Legacy Since 1907

Founded in 1907, Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club has been part of Edinburgh’s sporting landscape for over a century.

The original course was laid out by the renowned Scottish clubmaker and course designer Ben Sayers, before being thoughtfully remodelled in 1936 by the legendary Open Champion and architect James Braid.

Their influence is still felt in every undulating fairway, every strategic tee shot, and most notably in our distinctive Square Green.

Set across the Easter and Wester Craiglockhart Hills, the course has always worked in harmony with the natural landscape, offering panoramic views across the city that have remained unchanged for generations of members and visitors.

A Club Shaped by Tradition and Driven by the Future

Today, we are focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where golf sits alongside community and social connection. We believe the clubhouse should be as vibrant as the course, and that the club should feel open to members and the wider community.

This vision has seen the introduction of The Brasserie at Merchants, a growing social events calendar, flexible membership options, and a renewed focus on making golf enjoyable for all ages and abilities.

Whether you are drawn here by the history, the views, the golf, or the dining, you become part of a story that has been evolving since 1907 and is still being written today.
